Thoughts and other ramblings

This is going to be a fun week. I just arrived a few hours ago to one of our historical cities, Eger. It’s famous of it’s siege by the Turkish army in 1552. It was something like the battle of Thermopylae: about 2000 people defended the fort against the Turkish Army counting about 30-40 thousand soldier (resources give different numbers, some say 75 thousand, others 150 thousand, but the fact remains: the Hungarian soldiers were overpowered). In the end the defenders won, which meant the Turkish couldn’t get hold of the whole country. Yet. Eger was annected a few years later. Still, it was a huge victory even if we take into account that winter was close, and the Turkish army didn’t have enough supply. Luck was on our side, for a change. The bigger part of the country (and it was much bigger than now) hosted the Turkish Empire for about 150 years. Hence we have a lot of turkish oroginated words, some customs (they brought coffee with them for example) and several monuments/sights which can be visited. Anyway, I’m spending a few days in Eger, sightseeing, relaxing, writing and reading. I’m also getting my first tattoo.

And since we are talking about my tattoo. The first and biggest inspiration was the song The Story by Fivefold (see my Monday Music post about that song from last week). Then came the song Handwritten to make things perfect and the puzzle whole. I’ve known The Gaslight Anthem since last year I think. I don’t remember how did I stumble upon them, but I’m pretty much in love with ther album Handwritten. It has so many good songs, and one of my biggest favorite is the one which gave the title to the album. I’ve been listening to it for days on end. I was pretty obsessed about it.

Lyrics

Pull it out, turn it up, what’s your favorite song?
That’s mine, I’ve been crying to it since I was young
I know there’s someone out there feeling just how I feel
I know they’re waiting up, I know they’re waiting to heal
And I’ve been holding my breath,
Are you holding your breath, for too many years to count? And we waited for sirens that never come
And we only write by the moon, every word handwritten
And to ease the loss of youth and how many years I’ve missed you
Pages plead forgiveness, every word handwrittenLet it out, let me in, take a hold of my hand
There’s nothing like another soul that’s been cut up the same
And did you wanna drive without a word in-between?
I can understand, you need a minute to breathe
And to sew up the seams… after all this defeatAnd we waited for sirens that never come
And we only write by the moon, every word handwritten
And to ease the loss of youth and the many, many years I missed you
Pages plead forgiveness, every word handwrittenHere, in the dark, I cherish the moonlight
I’m in love with the way you’re in love with the night
And it travels from heart, to limb, to penAnd we waited for sirens that never come
And we only write by the moon, every word handwritten
And with this pen, I thee wed
From my heart to your distress
