Advent Book Calendar – Day 12

This year I’m going to host an Advent Book Calendar event, where Jen and me are going to pick one book every day until December 24th. Books we’ve read this year, and tell you why you should pick it up. You can check our progress in the Advent Book Calendar 2018 introduction post, where you can “open” the windows every day and find out what we have for your reading pleasure!

My pick for Day 12 is a book that I have thought about a lot over the last year. Touch of Iron by Timandra Whitecastle.

Norayah and her twin Owen, join an exiled Prince in his search for the Living Blade. I loved the dark fairy-tale feeling to this story and how it felt old and thick with superstitions.

This is a dark and violent world and the author doesn’t pull any punches showing how tough being a woman can be in this environment. This book pushed a lot of the boundaries of how I tend to pigeon hole my expectations of what I am reading by what genre it is in and I appreciate that it did that. Plus, it’s a great story and I can’t get enough of Nora and Diaz. I am looking forward to getting back to this series.

All the things I was impressed with in her short from The Lost Lore Anthology are here – that easy style that pulls you in and makes it hard to put down, connectable characters, a darker almost fairy-tale feel, and that trippy weirdness she did so well in her story, Into the Woods.

Is the Living Blade real or just a legend?

With it… Prince Bashan could win back his kingdom.
Master Telen Diaz can free himself of the burden from his past.
Owen Smith sees a once-in-a-lifetime chance to gain untold knowledge.

… but for Noraya Smith, the Living Blade will bring nothing but suffering and sorrow.
