Thoughts and other ramblings

So, yesterday was the finale of the first season of The Masked Singer here in Hungary, and one of the characters sang this song. And I can’t get it out of my head… Add Már, Uram, az Esőt! is one of the biggest Hungarian hits from the ’70s, a time when rock music had its golden age, despite communism. Below the Hungarian lyrics I added the English translations, so you can have an idea what the song is about. On the surface it’s about the weather, about the cycle of life. But I think on a deeper level it’s about wanting freedom, wanting change, wanting to finally be able to breath. And not be opressed by another country.

I think it also fits for the current situation – I’m quite sure we all want a breather from the pandemic and the lock down and just have a damned break. Or rain. Anything, really if it means change.

Hungarian / English Lyrics

Szomjas a föld és éhesek a fák.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Sárga a zöld és száraz a világ.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Kókad a búza, meghal a virág.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Hozd el a csúnya időt.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Bámul az égre a fiú meg a lány.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Bőg a sok állat eledel után.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Könnyeik öntözik csak a legelőt.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Fújd el a gonosz időt.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Add már, ó-ó-ó-ó, a-a-a-ó-ó!
Add már,
Add már,
Add már,
Add már, add már,
ó-ó-ó…
Ná-ná-ná…

Szomjas a föld és alig-alig él.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Roppan a fű és törik a levél.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Ó, ha ez így megy, oda a kenyér
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Enyhítsd meg a levegőt.
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Éjszínű felleget közelít a szél.
Hozd már az Uram esőt!
Telnek a vödrök és csobog a remény.
Add már az Uram esőt!

Emberek éneke az egekig ér
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Add már …Uram …az esőt!

The fields are thirsty and the trees are hungry,
My Lord, give us rain already!
The green is yellow and the world is dry,
My Lord, give us rain already!
The wheat is fading, the flower will die,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Bring the bad weather,
My Lord, give us rain already!
The boy and the girl staring at the sky,
My Lord, give us rain already!
The animals cry, ’cause are hungry,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Only their tears irrigates the field,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Blow away the bad weather,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Give us already, ohh, ah-ooh!
Give us already,
Give us already,
Give us already,
Give us already, give us already,
Ohohoh…
Na-na-na-na-na
Oh, oh.
The earth is thirsty, it’s barely alive,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Cracking grass and breaking leafs,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Oh, if it goes this way, the bread is lost,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Freshen up the air,
My Lord, give us rain already!
The wind brings a night coloured cloud,
My Lord, bring us rain already!
Buckets are filling, hope is gurgling,
My Lord, give us rain already!
People’s song reach the skies,
My Lord, give us rain already!
My Lord, give us rain already!
Give us already!
My Lord!
The rain!
