Monthly Wrap Up January

Monthly Wrap Up: January 2021

Well, you guys can’t say I don’t know how to kick a year off. In the first days of January, I dropped the news of changing the blog’s name to Queen’s Book Asylum. Then went on and launched my own music-themed reading challenge, The Sound of Madness (still not too late to join). It both feels like it’s been a long time ago and yesterday. Weird. Anyway, thankfully we had a lot of other content up on the blog your reading pleasures.

All that being said, it’s time for a Monthly Wrap Up, let’s see what we were up to in January!

Book Reviews

In case you missed any of our reviews in January, it’s your chance to catch up!

We Lie With Death by Devin Madson – 5/5

We Lie with Death by Devin Madson

I got to review (again), the most excellent second book of Devin Madson’s series. The third is coming this summer, so be sure to catch up until then.

We Lie With Death is cleverly written, intricate and addictive, merging genres like it’s the most natural thing in the world while handling topics with a sensitivity that shows Madson’s genius. If you didn’t read We Ride the Storm yet, start it now because you don’t want to miss out on We Lie With Death!”

The Killer Across the Table by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker – 3.5/5

The Killer Across the Table by John E. Douglas

My first read of the year was a True Crime book about serial killers. I also started the year off by binging Mindhunter on Netflix which was based on these guys’ similarly titled book. Great stuff.

“This book is definitely informative, but I was just missing something that would make it stand out. But The Killer Across the Table definitely gives us a look into the process and if nothing else, makes us realize that profiling is not for the faint-hearted. That and real life is a whole lot different than crime TV shows.”

The Part About the Dragon Was (Mostly) True by Sean Gibson – 4/5

The Part About the Dragon Was (Mostly) True by Sean Gibson

Jen took part in Storytellers On Tour’s book tour for The Part About The Dragon Was (Mostly) True and quite enjoyed this Comic Fantasy.

“Goofy fun. Sit back and let yourself be entertained, as our little adventuring group bickers their way through some very messy situations in their quest to make a name for themselves.”

A Song With Teeth by T. Frohock – 5/5

A Song With Teeth by T. Frohock

Ahead of the release of the final book of the Los Nefilim series, Jen and myself reviewed it to tell you how awesome it is.

“This whole journey for these characters is a very emotional, and so human and full of beautiful, albeit painful at times lessons.”

“If you are looking for a Historical Fantasy series with kick ass magic, strong messages, LGBTQ+ rep, and loveable characters, then you definitely should give a go to Los Nefilim. It’s raw, brutal, emotional and so damn satisfactory.”

SPFBO

Reviews

In January, after a well deserved break, we started reviewing the SPFBO 6 Finalists and we’ll continue to do so in regular(ish) intervals until the end of April.

Last Memoria by Rachel Emma Shaw

Sarilla has learnt one thing from stealing memories. Everybody lies.

There’s nothing Sarilla hates more than stealing memories, but the king forces her to take them to keep his subjects in line. She wants to escape to where nobody knows what she is or what she can do, but her plans go awry when she runs into Falon.

Falon has a six month void in his memories that he’s desperate to restore. He doesn’t know why they were taken or what they contained, nor why the man he loves is acting so cagily about what happened during that time. He hopes to use Sarilla to get back his stolen memories and doesn’t care what she wants or why she’s desperate to escape. She will help him get them back, whether she wants to or not.

Party With the Stars

Have you ever wondered what might happen if you could throw a party of your choice and not only could you invite your MC(s) but other literary figures as well? In this feature, Party with the Stars, I ask you to imagine exactly that scenario and some more.

Shaun Paul Stevens Party with the Stars invitation

Born in London in 1972, Shaun spent his formative years in the shadows of the dreaming spires of Oxford, before moving to Nottingham where he graduated university with a degree in English and Media. Navigating a path through music, art and the internet, writing came calling and he soon found himself firmly ensconced in alternate realities and gritty fantasy worlds. He has written several books to date. Shaun lives in Brighton, on the south coast of England, where he splits his time between his fiction and family life.

Justin Lee Anderson Party With the Stars invitation

What Do We Plan for 2021?

It’s kinda traditional by now that in January we put our plans for the year out, regarding books and challenges and what not. 2021 is no different though I hold myself back now that there are the 3 of us and I can’t ramble as much, lol.

5 Anticipated Albums of 2021

This is kinda my only resolution for 2021 – I’d like to get back writing more music-themed posts and so I started with looking at my most anticipated albums of 2021. Well, at least those I know of, anyway.

I think that’s it for January. I hope to see you all in February!

Timy

Timy, also known as Queen Terrible Timy hails from a magical land called Hungary, born and raised in its capital city, Budapest. Books have been her refuge and best friends ever since she can remember along with music. She might be a tiny bit addicted to the latter. Timy is the owner and editor of Queen's Book Asylum. In her free time (hah!) she likes to create things, collect panda stuff, go to concerts, travel, and take the literary world one book at a time.
