Meet the Author
Zamil Akhtar

When Zamil was fourteen, he moved from the dry, dune-spotted Arabian peninsula to the hilly, arctic wasteland that is Western Massachusetts. He despises the cold, isn’t very fond of the sun, and prefers spending all day indoors mashing the keyboard in the hopes something great will come of it. When not dreaming up dark and fantastical journeys, he enjoys binging horror movies, wasting precious time arguing about international relations on Reddit, and occasionally traveling somewhere exotic. He currently lives in Dubai with his loving wife and his badly-behaved pet rabbit.

Gunmetal Gods by Zamil Akhtar

They took his daughter, so Micah comes to take their kingdom. Fifty thousand gun-toting paladins march behind him, all baptized in angel blood, thirsty to burn unbelievers.

Only the janissaries can stand against them. Their living legend, Kevah, once beheaded a magus amid a hail of ice daggers. But ever since his wife disappeared, he spends his days in a haze of hashish and poetry.

To save the kingdom, Kevah must conquer his grief and become the legend he once was. But Micah writes his own legend in blood, and his righteous conquest will stop at nothing.

When the gods choose sides, a legend will be etched upon the stars.

Beneath A Thousand Skies – review

“I will say, this was not the easiest of reads – it demands your attention, and it starts off dark and only gets darker, and the pacing will sweep you away and may risk losing you in the currents, but honestly, it was more than worth it and I couldn’t put it down, and this is a book that you should certainly add to your TBR.”

Highh Fantasy – review

“Gunmetal Gods is a story of love, loss, hate, war and hope for redemption in bleak world. Zamil Akhtar piles on the dark but never smothers hope entirely. I throughly enjoyed this and will be reading Conqueror’s Blood very soon.”

“I especially like how deeply ingrained the culture and religion are in the personality of the characters. The religion is the invisible hand that affects each decision they make. How both culture & religion can influence and mold one’s ambitions. The extent of horrors a person is willing to do in the name of his gods.”

“The story is amazing and interesting. All the characters are strong and if you like the read with supernatural and djinn touch then this is for you.”

“The characters were well-developed and intriguing. Both protagonists were driven by their own ambition, revenge, and ruthlessness, resulting to doing terrible things. Each faced conflicts when it came to their faith and interpersonal aspects.”

Gunmetal Gods by Zamil Akhtar IG wrap up
Inspired by

Micah the Metal played by Rami Malek

Rami Malek

Rami Malek is a strong fit to play the fanatical general Micah. The Mr. Robot star has so much range – he can be cold, warm, villainous, and he’ll need all that range to bring the crusading, self-contemplative warrior-general Micah to life. Judging by how villainous he is in the trailers for the new Bond movie, I have no doubt in this choice.

divider

Sadie the Khatun played by Naomi Scott

Naomi Scott

Naomi Scott was perfect as Jasmine from Aladdin, and she also kicked ass in Charlie’s Angels, so I think she’d be great as the warrior-princess Sadie, who is both soft-hearted and fierce. But she’ll have to learn how to ride a horse and shoot a bow the way a steppe warrior would!

divider

Kevah the Janissary played by Dev Patel

Dev Patel

Kevah, the main character, was the hardest to cast, but I think Dev Patel would crush it. Kevah is a janissary that’s past his best days but is struggling to be as great as he once was. Dev Patel does well in transformative roles, like the main character in Slumdog Millionaire. He’s also starring in my most anticipated movie, The Green Knight, where he plays King Arthur’s knight Gawain.

divider

Shah Murad played by Naveen Andrews

Naveen Andrews

Naveen Andrews played Syed from Lost, and he was so awesome in that role. I think he could do a good job as a warrior-king who has gained some weight and is over-the-hill in regard to his fighting days.

divider

Aschere the Magus played by Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana

As an aside, I actually met Zoe Saldana when I was an extra in Star Trek Beyond during its Dubai shooting. I met most of the other actors too, but out of all of them, she was the warmest and friendliest to us lowly extras.

Which will pose a challenge because Aschere the Magus is anything but warm and friendly. But Zoe Saldana, who has starred in Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Pirates of the Caribbean, is such a good actress, I think she’d hit it out of the park as the cold, calculating Aschere.

divider

Grand Vizier Ebra played by Riz Ahmed

Riz Ahmed

He’s probably my favorite actor so I had to put him in here. He’d have no problem playing the haughty Grand Vizier, seeing as Riz Ahmed can play literally anything given his personality-sprawling roles in Star Wars, Nightcrawler, Bourne, and more.
