The Captain is book two of Casey Hollingshead’s Battle Brothers series and the sequel to SPFBO8 semi-finalist The Witch Hunter. The Captain is due to be released on April 15th 2023 and is currently available for preorder.
Now, the eagle-eyed amongst you may shout, ‘This isn’t a cover reveal, I’ve already seen it on Rob J Hayes’ new release post,’ and you’d be correct. But I really love the cover for The Captain and really want more Grimdark fans to pick up the series.
Casey is the lead writer for the video game company Overhype Studios in Hamburg, Germany.

Just to refresh your mind, here is the cover for The Witch Hunter, which was a SPFBO8 semi-finalist for Queen’s Book Asylum and was reviewed here.
SHUDDUP PAUL, WHAT DOES BOOK TWO FARKING LOOK LIKE?

I absolutely love it! There’s a retro D&D module style to it, and it really captures the bloody and grim atmosphere that suffuses the book.
Having checked out Goran’s work, I’m honestly in awe of his art. The old-school aesthetic, face-slapping contrast, and general grimdark metalness are just delicious. It’s not all darkness, though, as there’s also a pretty sweet Fleetwood Mac Tom Bombadil/Goldberry over on his site, so definitely check that out.

“You wish to talk rumors? Where would I even begin? I have heard of direwolves, lindwurms, dragons, nachzehrers, webknechts, and a wiederganger at the hip of a black clad cultist. Hells, I once received a tale that the trees themselves came alive and skewered men dead with branches shaped like spears! Richter, please, the laity love to talk about all the ghouls and ghosts these woods hold, but until you see it with your own eyes…”
Now captain of a struggling mercenary company, Richter von Dagentear takes on a dangerous brigand known as Kantorek, ‘the King of Dragons.’ But bandits and thieves are not all that roam the forests. With a witch hunter’s hat atop his head and a sellsword’s blade at his hip, Richter must recruit and equip a ragtag group of fighters to not only complete contracts, but survive what evils lurk beyond the trees.
Keep your eyes peeled for a review of The Captain, which will be being posted later in the month.
If you’re excitedly awaiting book two, or if you’re tempted by the series and just want a quick introduction to the world, why not check out Hollingshead’s comic book The Caretaker, which is set in the Battle Brothers world and runs at a bite-size 15 pages.
