Music Monday: Deadly Valentine by Charlotte Gainsbourg

Music Monday is a meme that was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. Bjørn and I will pick a song alternatively on each Monday and share our thoughts about them. Bjørn’s pick this week is Deadly Valentine by Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Thoughts and Ramblings

Charlotte Gainsbourg is one of those French women from French movies in which French men smoke French cigarettes, and French women prepare for a hot date by sticking their head under the tap, throwing their hair back, and ensuring that they haven’t accidentally caught a make-up. She’s a wonderful actress with the stage presence of a chair (which she sat on throughout the concert I attended, carefully avoiding eye contact with the audience), her vocal range extends to about half an octave, and my ‘favourite Charlotte Gainsbourg songs’ playlist is the complete compilation of everything she has ever recorded.

Do yourself a favour and don’t just listen to ‘Deadly Valentine’, but also watch the video. It’s absolutely heartbreaking beautiful. Just like the song itself. Also, I don’t know why Dev Hynes is in it, but I have absolutely no complaints.

Song Lyrics

With this ring I thee wed with all my worldly goods I thee endow
To love and to cherish according to God’s holy ordinance

With this ring I thee wed with all my worldly goods I thee endow
To love and to cherish according to God’s holy ordinance
You have declared your consent, may the Lord fill you both with blessings
(From this day forward till death do us part)
From this day forward, for better, for worse, until death do us part
(From this day forward till death do us part)

You have declared your consent, may the Lord fill you both with blessings
From this day forward, for better, for worse, until death do us part

With this ring I thee wed with all my worldly goods I thee endow
To love and to cherish according to God’s holy ordinance
You have declared your consent, may the Lord fill you both with blessings
(From this day forward till death do us part)
From this day forward, for better, for worse, until death do us part
(From this day forward till death do us part)

To love and to cherish according to God’s holy ordinance

Hey! If a man can show just cause why they
May not lawfully be together
Let him now speak or hereafter
For ever let him hold his peace
As it says I am my beloved
And my beloved is mine

With this ring I thee wed with all my worldly goods I thee endow
To love and to cherish according to God’s holy ordinance
You have declared your concern, may the Lord fill you both with blessings
(From this day forward till death do us part)
From this day forward, for better, for worse, until death do us part
(From this day forward till death do us part)

Damn! Can’t even remember my name
You are my thing, I’m my own shadow
You are my little hurricane
Pictures are gently left behind me
Somewhere a face that I can’t find
You are my deadly valentine

With this ring I thee wed with all my worldly goods I thee endow
To love and to cherish according to God’s holy ordinance
You have declared your concern, may the Lord fill you both with blessings
(From this day forward till death do us part)
From this day forward, for better, for worse, until death do us part
(From this day forward till death do us part)
