Music Monday is a meme that was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. Bjørn and I will pick a song alternatively on each Monday and share our thoughts about them. Bjørn’s pick this week is Connection by Elastica.

Elastica emerged on the wave of Britpop’s popularity. It didn’t hurt that the singer was the girlfriend of Damon Albarn of Blur (and, later, Gorillaz). The opening guitar riff, which is absolutely brilliant, comes from ‘Three Girl Rhumba’ by Wire. A genius doesn’t steal, though, a genius borrows, and as good as Wire’s song is, ‘Connection’ is just that – genius. Handily beating most of Blur’s discography and a good half of Garbage’s, ‘Connection’ unfortunately also overshadows all of Elastica’s more or less acceptable two albums. This vital connection was only made once, but my life’s better for it.
While copy-pasting the lyrics, I discovered that I had a case of missherd lyrics here. ‘They don’t believe it now, Justine gets stupid’ would have been so much better, seeing as the singer’s name is indeed Justine. Oh well. I still love it.

Riding on any wave
That is the luck you crave
They don’t believe it now
They just think it’s stupid
So got anything?
Anyone could have done
Who would’ve cared at all
Not you
Another heart has made the trade
Forget it, forget it, forget it
I don’t understand how a heart is a spade
But somehow the vital connection is made
Riding on anything
Anything’s good enough
Who would’ve thought it of
Someone like you
Just as they brought me ’round
Now that they brought you down
Roundabout and roundabout
Who wants a life anyway?
Another heart has made the grade
Forget it, forget it, forget it
I don’t understand how the last card is played
But somehow the vital connection is made
