Okay, so this day is a bit special. August 20th is our biggest national holiday. We celebrate the birth of our country. Aprox. in 1000. Stephen I had become our first king and accepted Christianity. Our ancestors arrived to this part of the world at the end of the 9th century. We celebrate on this day, because Stephen had become approved as a saint on this day in 1083. We have a huge firework on this day throughout the country, but my favorite part is watching my favorite Hungarian rock opera, Stephen the King. It tells the story of his coronation and how he fought against a Hungarian warlord called Koppány, who followed old traditions and religion, while Stephen agreed to be a Christian and marry a woman from a foreign country afer his father’s death. Koppány on the other hand thinks he should marry the widow Queen and rule over the country and oppose Christianity. The musical was first performed in 1983, and Gyula Vikidál played Koppány, the best ever to play this role. I just have goosebumps from his voice every time I hear it.
