Music Monday

Music Monday: Long Live Rock & Roll by Daughtry

Music Monday is a meme that was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. Bjørn and I will pick a song alternatively on each Monday and share our thoughts about them. Timy’s pick this week is Long Live Rock & Roll by Daughtry.

Thoughts and Ramblings

I can’t fucking believe that 1) I only ever picked one Daughtry song for Music Monday and 2) I never ever picked Long Live Rock & Roll. Whatever the fuck is wrong with me? *ahem*

Chris Daughtry is one of those musicians whose music is always on my player, but not often pick up for myself. The first song I ever heard from him was from his self-titled debut album, It’s Not Over. I instantly fell in love with his voice. I sometimes feel like harder rock would suit him more than the pop-rocky thing he has going on. Sure, some of his tunes are catchy, and upbeat (especially his Baptized album, which I listened to a lot), but there is some raw quality to him that’s not coming out. I’d be very curious to see him live, I wonder what he is doing onstage.

Daughtry came to mind today because one of his songs, Cinderella came up on my player (from the Baptized album) and it was just the right moment for that little upbeat song and got me in a good mood despite everything. And yet, that’s not the song I’m putting forward, but another, my favorite from, you got it right, the Baptized album. Long Live Rock & Roll is another fun catchy song that pays homage to some of rock & roll’s best. It doesn’t have any deep message or anything, it’s just an anthem to rock & roll and I’m absolutely here for that.

Song Lyrics

Well, I was born
The year that disco died
And U2 was in high school
Thank the Lord that they survived
Got my first taste, on a Seger 45
And since that Kiss, I’ve rocked all day
And partied every night
And we still argue ’bout who’s better
Elton John or Billy Joel
We still wonder if Kurt really wrote the songs she sang in Hole
No, we’ll never stop believing
It’s the Journey of our lives
So won’t you help me Pour Some Sugar
On these memories tonight?
Singin’

Long live rock
Long live roll
Long live big guitars and music for the soul
Sayin’
Don’t give up, don’t grow old
Long live crazy nights and records made of gold
Long live Rock and Roll

Summer of ’96, I got my first guitar
I played it ’til my fingers said, “You’re gonna be a star”
Grunge was everything, at least it was to me
A Marshall in my Chevy Sprint
Just running down a dream
We still argue ’bout who’s better
Mötley Crüe or GNR
And we still can’t believe Van Halen turned into Van Hagar
Now the record shops are gone for good
And no one seems to care
But me and you and all our friends
Keep Living On That Prayer

Long live rock
Long live roll
Long live big guitars and music for the soul
Sayin’
Don’t give up, don’t grow old
Long live crazy nights and records made of gold
Long live Rock and Roll

Went to bed in Cleveland
Woke up in Tennessee
No matter where I roam tonight
I’m chasing history
We still argue ’bout who’s better
The Beatles or The Stones
They’re forever 27
Jimmy, Janis, Brian Jones
And we stand here in their memory
‘Cause the songs, they still survive
So throw your lighters up
And darling, sing with me tonight
Come on

Long live rock
Long live roll
Long live big guitars and music for the soul
Sayin’
Don’t give up, don’t grow old
Long live crazy nights and records made of gold
Long live Rock and Roll
Long live rock
Long live roll
Long live big guitars and music for the soul
Sayin’
Don’t give up, don’t grow old
Long live crazy nights and records made of gold
Long live Rock and Roll

Long live Rock and Roll
