It’s that time of the year again when we look back at the previous year and prepare for the one ahead of us. And so, I’m here to share my reading goals for 2025 with you! Buckle up peeps, because this is going to be one long-ass post with a lot of books mentioned. Hey, it might help grow your TBR. It looks so abandoned and sad 😉
2024 wasn’t a bad year reading-wise even if it had its ups and downs. Since most of everything I figured out for last year worked out quite nicely, I’m not going to change anything this time around. There will be occasional updates in my monthly newsletter (you can sign up here – please note that there will be a confirmation email and a welcoming letter, if you get that, you are all good. If not, let me know!), quarterly challenge check-ins, and of course, I’ll have a BlueSky thread for the books I’ve read in 2025 as well as an update thread for The Sound of Madness Challenge’s 2025 edition. Those are the best ways to keep up to date on how I’m faring with my reading goals for 2025.

GoodReads Reading Challenge
In previous years I was experimenting with setting higher numbers for myself as a challenge, but life has its own way and I didn’t always met those numbers. So then I settled for 40, and I’m going to stick with that for 2025 as well. It’s a nice, reasonable, and easily achievable number without any stress on my part.
Q1: 22 out of my goal of 40. I think it’s safe to say this isn’t going to be a problem.
Q2: 33 out of 40. All good.
Q3: 46 out of 40. I guess we can say I smashed it.
Womble’s TBR Reduction Challenge
I had fun with Womble’s TBR Reduction Challenge in 2023 and 2024, so I’m happy to attempt it again in 2025! This is not one of my more successful challenges overall, but I’m nothing if not determined!
For those who are not familiar with the challenge, a quick recap: There is a theme for each month to help reduce your TBR (anything added BEFORE January 1st, 2025). There are also stretch goals if you are the competitive kind. It’s a pretty relaxed reading challenge and no one will police you so if you’d like to reduce your TBR a bit, this is a fun way to do so! If you follow Womble on BlueSky, you can get handy reminders of each prompt at the beginning of the month.
I was a good girl and I’m well prepared to start! I already have my shortened TBR I’d like to focus on in 2025 (more details below in this post) that I can use for these prompts as well.
You can check out Womble’s TBR Reduction Challenge HERE.
UPDATE Q1: 2 out of 3 prompts in Q1, so far so good.
January – First Steps: Heir of Uncertain Magic by Charlie N. Holmberg. We had to read the last book we added to the TBR, and well, I kind of did. It totally counts.
February – Short and Sweet: I should have read 28 short stories, but that was quite impossible with SPFBO and my ARCs. I might come back to this prompt later in the year, though.
March – Ready Steady Go!: The Neon Boneyard by Craig Schaefer. Strictly speaking, I read this in February, but Womble gave us permission to finish the prompts any time, so I’m only cheating a little bit. So the prompt was to read the first book of a series, or the next one, that has been lingering on our shelves. Well, this is the 8th Daniel Faust book, and I’ve been meaning to catch up with the series for years. This might be my year. Only 3 more to go, until she decides to surprise launch another one on me this year – which is a very high possibility.

UPDATE Q2: 1 out of 3 prompts in Q2, not my best, but it was expected.
April – Easter Eggs: The Locust Job by Craig Schaefer. So, I didn’t read this in April, but it still fits as we had to read a book with stories within stories. Some of Schaefer’s series are part of The First Story universe. The first story ever written plays out over and over as the characters reincarnate in different universes – they all have the same destiny but this time they are trying to break the cycle. Faust gets involved, and the characters show up from time to time. And since I ticked this off, I can also add the stretch goal which was to pick a book by an author I love – that book happens to be Into the River Dead by Michael Dylan, which I did read in April, so we are all good.
May – The Random Factor: This is the prompt I’m willing to come back to at one point. We have to read the 5th book we spot on our shelf/list/whatever. But between the ARCs and other stuff I didn’t have many opportunities to pick random books.
June – Use the daylight/long reading night: LOL. There was absolutely no chance picking the longest book on my TBR. I was mostly reading ARCs and also taking a well earned break – which I spent with working and packing.

UPDATE Q3: 3 out of 3 prompts in Q3, so that’s not bad.
July – Travelling broadens the mind: Cross the Line by Luck Hart. Look, for me, this is the easiest prompt ever. We had to read a book from someone who is from the other side of the world. Living in the middle of Europe, I went for an American author. I also managed the stretch goal which was to read a book set in a different country from my own. As I don’t read anything Hungarian, and I rarely come across books that are set in Hungary, this is pretty much true of every book I read. I decided to pick The Summer Fair by Heidi Swain, that’s set in England.
August – Take a trip?: We were supposed to read a book from a genre we don’t usually read. But August wasn’t my best reading month, and I haven’t read anything out of the norm. Hell, I just finished moving between flats, the last thing I needed was one more thing out of the norm.
September – Just the facts: Hollywood Horrors: Murders, Scandals, and Cover-Ups from Tinseltown by Andrea van Landingham. Non-fiction is something I don’t usually read – dear Womble got me in a pickle here, because this book would have been the perfect fit for August, too. But alas, I read it in September and it fit the prompt, so here we go.
The Sound of Madness Reading Challenge
The Sound of Madness is of course back for its fifth year! I already got the introduction post up, but here is a quick rundown: I have 25 music-based prompts, and I’ll attempt to fill out my bingo-like card during 2025. 1 will use 1 book/prompt, and only books read in 2025 will count. I will try not to add rereads. I had a LOT of fun coming up with the prompts, so I hope more people will join me in this one.
As usual, you can follow my BlueSky update thread, you can join on The Storygraph and I also recommend checking out the Spotify playlist!
Check out The Sound of Madness Reading Challenge HERE
UPDATE Q1: I filled 4 prompts out of 25
UPDATE Q2: I filled 6 prompts which now stands at 10 out of 25
UPDATE Q3: I filled 7 prompts which now stands at 17 out of 25
The current state of the card:

Choose Your Own Adventure: Year in Aeldia 2025 Reading Challenge
I had a lot of fun with this one in 2024 so I kept all my fingers crossed for G to announce a new set of prompts for 2025. I failed at her Magical Readathon, but I pretty much suspected it would be the case. It was just way too much for me, but at least I tried and now I can return to my more relaxed challenges. And she not only announced new prompts, but with a twist made it extra fun with a boardgame setting!
The Choose Your Own Adventure: Year in Aeldia 2025 Reading Challenge is hosted by G @Book Roast (who is also behind the whole Magical Readathon, you should check out her videos if you are interested. She has a lot of cool additional stuff like booklets and whatnot). There is also a handy guide video for beginners who are getting lost in the whole maze that the readathon has become, lol.
Okay, so, as she changed the format a bit, I had a lot of thinking. On the one hand, it would be fun not to check the prompts ahead of time to make things more interesting, but the control freak/neurodivergent in me wants to have at least a resemblance of a plan to know what would be the optimal route for me based on the prompts I could manage between everything. Eventually, curiosity won and I peeked at the prompts a bit and tried to suss out a general route (not that I will remember any of them in like a day). I think my approach will be that I’ll plan only 2-3 steps ahead so I can appease my brain but also keep up a mystery/luck element that goes with boardgames. I’m super excited to get to this in 2025!

January – 1A (book published in 2024): Mushroom Blues by Adrian M. Gibson. We had the same prompt for all of the 1st steps, which was easy enough. And it aligned nicely with my already planned reading list.
February – 2A – North (book from the top shelf): We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian. I had to be creative with this prompt, because on my physical top shelf are books I already read and loved and I wanted to go with this route. So I went to my spreadsheet where I have my shortened TBR listed, sectioned it according to the prompts, and picked one from the upper section. I did keep the spirit of the prompt, so I’m good. As was the book, btw.
March – 3D – Inspect well (read a thriller): Where the Bones Lie by Nick Kolakowski. Going this route was not a brainer, because I already planned to read at least one thriller, so it all worked out nicely.

April – 4D – Wait for Morning (read a book entirely in the AM hours): Into the River Dead by Michael Dylan. Okay, so, I cheated (which is totally allowed!!) because I never read in the AM hours, like, who does that?! But, we are allowed to switch prompts if needed, so I went for a book that has river in the title.
May – 5D – A Sundancer! (book where a main character is a dancer or dance is important part of the book): You & I, Rewritten by Chip Pons. Since I forgot to plan my reading accordingly, I had to be a bit creative. This book doesn’t have a dancer, nor is dancing an important part of the book, HOWEVER, there is a club the characters sometimes go to and some dancing was happening followed by jealousy. And I think this was the book where they went to karaoke and I’m pretty sure this was the moment the MC really fell in love with his partner as he was singing and dancing on the stage.
June – 6D – Sketch Sundancer (read a book featuring a fantasy character): How to Find a Nameless Fae by A. J. Lancaster. Finally a prompt where I didn’t have to cheat! Since I read a lot of fantasy, this wasn’t much of a problem. And this book – surprise! – features a fae.

July – 7D – Write Notes (read a 5 star prediction book, write and share a review of it): A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna. As I very much enjoyed The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, I couldn’t wait to read Sangu Mandanna‘s next book. Fortunately for me, I got my hands on an ARC and was able to read it for this prompt. I ended up giving it a 4.5👑 tho, but it’s close enough.
August – 8D – Stargaze (read a book with stars on the cover): Castaways by Craig Schaefer. This prompt was tricky. I mentioned previously that August wasn’t my best reading month (a gross understatement), but I eventually settled on Castaways as 1) it fits the prompt (THE STARS ARE THERE, EVEN IF TINY!), 2) I can never go wrong with a Schaefer book, and 3) I already owned the book.
September – 9C – Travel to Kerador (read a book with purple cover): Thief in the Night by KJ Charles. Not going to lie, I *almost* tripped on this one. Purple is my favorite color, and somehow most of the books on my radar were later books in series that I haven’t gotten to yet. Which was super frustrating. Thankfully, KJ Charles came to my aid as I found the audiobook for one of her novellas that can pass as having a purple cover, thank you very much.

Making a shortened TBR list worked out really well for me in 2023, not so much in 2024, but I’m determined to try again! Since it’s hard to say what’s going to happen later in the year, I will have one major update in June when I’ll have a clearer view of what’s coming in the second half of the year, and I will also be able to include the new batch of SPFBO books.
Most of the titles I didn’t get to in 2024 were moved to 2025 (which is nice, that means less work for me on this massive post, yay!), but I also added some new titles – new upcoming releases, books I got in 2024, etc. I bloated the list from 50 to 70 (which I think kind of cursed me at doing well because 23 out of 50 would have sounded much better than 23 out of 70…), and I ended up increasing that even more to 75. I didn’t even try to go back down to 50. I was doomed from the start so I chose not to lie to myself. And look, it’s kind of my fault, because I forgot to add the 9 SPFBO 10 finalists and added way too many new books and it was hard to whittle down to 70 after that…
At the time of writing this post, I didn’t arrange any buddy reads or readalongs, but hey, anything can happen! I will definitely keep an eye on Wyrd & Wonder month-related announcements to see what those ladies are coming up with and whether I’ll be able to join or not. Also, if you see something on this list that interests you and want to arrange a buddy read, please let me know!
Now, let’s get down to business. If you’d like to know more about the books listed below, clicking on the titles will take you to their respective GoodReads pages. I’ll update this post once the yet-to-be-announced covers and info will be available.
UPDATE Q1: 13 books out of 75 cleared! A good start.
UPDATE Q2: I read 9 more books so we are at 22 out of 75!
UPDATE Q3: I read 5 more books so we are at 27 out of 75! And as we are nearing the end of the year, I decided to add another table of books – the Oh, Look, Shiny! list has the books I picked up over the year that weren’t on my immediate TBR, but also weren’t rereads or new releases (those went on to the first table, naturally).
