Music Monday

Music Monday: Get Up and Kill Your Conscience by Shinedown

Music Monday is a meme that was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. You pick a song and/or video and share it on Monday.

Thoughts and other ramblings

I could swear I already had Get Up picked for Music Monday, but turns out I was wrong. Oh well, there is no better time than now then.

When I first listened to Shinedown latest album Attention Attention, I didn’t like it much. Then as I prepared to go to their first ever Hungarian concert last June and my interview with the band – in the end I got to talk to the drummer, Barry Kerch – I’ve listened to it a few times and it soon became my favorite Shinedown album. After the show I ended up listening to it for weeks. It’s their first concept album and its main topics are depression, addiction and the struggle it comes with those things. As I started to pay attention to the lyrics it all came together for me and could connect to it. I was going through a phase back then and it definitely helped. Actually I should have listened to this album a lot more at the start of this year… Anyway, I had a hard time picking one song. I already did Black Soul, so at least that was out. Kill Your Conscience, Get Up and Brilliant were fighting for the spot today. I asked people to pick a number and it was a tie between Get Up and Kill Your Conscience, then I asked one more person to solve the problem, but in the end I just said fuck it and went for both.

Lyrics

Get Up

Get up, get up
Get up, get up
Get up, get up
Get up, get up, get up, get up
Get up, get up, get up, get up

I know you’re clinging to the light of day
To tell you everything’s A-okay
And medication don’t do much
Yeah, it just numbs the brain
Guess you might say I’m a little intense
I’m on the bright side of being hellbent
So take it from me, you’re not the only one
Who can’t see straight (Can’t see straight)

If you’re ever in doubt
Don’t sell yourself short, you might be bulletproof
Hard to move mountains when you’re paralyzed
But you gotta try
And I’m calling out…

Get up, get up
Get a move on
Get up, get up
What’s taking so long?
Get up, get up
Get a move on
Stop stalling, I’m calling out
Get up, get up
Get a move on
Get up, get up
Ain’t nothing wrong
‘Cause I believe you can be whatever
And I agree you can do much better, trust me
Trust me

Everybody wants to sing their song
Some Marvin Gaye “What’s Going On”
Ain’t nothing normal when it comes to you and me
I’d rather twist myself in knots than watch you give up on your dreams

If you were ever in doubt
Don’t sell yourself short, you might be bulletproof
Hard to move mountains when you’re paralyzed
But you gotta try
So, I’m calling out…

Get up, get up
Get a move on
Get up, get up
What’s taking so long?
Get up, get up
Get a move on
Stop stalling, I’m calling out
Get up, get up
Get a move on
Get up, get up
Ain’t nothing wrong
‘Cause I believe you can be whatever
And I agree you can do much better, trust me

Yeah, I don’t know why I never talk about it
I guess that’s probably part of the problem
Yeah, sometimes you’re wrong, sometimes you’re right
I’m just gonna keep moving
Yeah, I’m just gonna keep moving
Today, tomorrow and the next

Get up, get up
Get a move on
Get up, get up
What’s taking so long?
Get up, get up
Get a move on
Stop stalling, I’m calling out
Get up, get up
Get a move on
Get up, get up
Ain’t nothing wrong
‘Cause I believe you can be whatever
And I agree you can do much better, trust me

Get up, get up
Get up, get up, get up, get up, get up, get up…

Kill Your Conscience

Beast mode, everybody striking a pose
Everybody’s taxing my soul
They say it’s all the rage, to never act your age
So what you gonna hit me with next?
Darwin or a Crucifix?
So why you wanna do me like this?
It’s always so extreme, so what’s it really mean?

When you’re begging for a brick
Just to throw it back and forth
And you call each other sick
Yet you’re coming back for more
Back for more of what you love
Back for more of what you hate
You can’t stop (stop, stop!)
‘Cause you’re already too late

So you kill your conscience, cry yourself to sleep
Kill your conscience, better you than me
You’re all plugged in, ready and rehearsed
Do your best, do your worst, show me where it hurts
Kill your conscience
Kill your conscience
Yeah you’re all plugged in, ready and rehearsed
Do your best, do your worst, show me where it hurts

Good luck (good luck)
Everybody’s passing the buck (the buck)
Praying that they’re making the cut (the cut)
They’ll sell you by the pound and keep you underground

While you’re scratching at the gate
Screaming “come on, let me in!”
Like a fully-loaded zombie
Throwing caution to the wind
Back for more of what you love
Back for more of what you hate
You can’t stop (stop, stop!)
‘Cause you’re already too late

So you kill your conscience, cry yourself to sleep
Kill your conscience, better you than me
You’re all plugged in, ready and rehearsed
Do your best, do your worst, show me where it hurts
Kill your conscience
Kill your conscience
Yeah you’re all plugged in, ready and rehearsed
Do your best, do your worst, show me where it hurts

(Ready! Aim! Consience!)
(Hey!)
(Ready! Aim! Consience!)
(Hey!)
(Ready! Aim! Consience!)
(Hey!)
(Ready! Aim! Consience!)
(Hey!)

(Hey!)
(Hey!)
(Hey!)
(Hey!)

Kill your conscience, cry yourself to sleep
Kill your conscience, better you than me
You’re all plugged in, ready and rehearsed
Do your best, do your worst, show me where it hurts
Kill your conscience
Kill your conscience
Yeah you’re all plugged in, ready and rehearsed
Do your best, do your worst, show me where it hurts

(Kill your conscience)
(Kill your conscience)
(Kill your conscience)
(Kill your conscience)
(Kill your conscience)
