Music Monday is a meme that was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. Bjørn and I will pick a song alternatively on each Monday and share our thoughts about them. Bjørn’s pick this week is Sugar by Ladytron.

I could make a top 20 list of my favourite songs about cocaine that pretend not to be about cocaine (read the lyrics of Seal’s ‘Kiss From a Rose’ when you’ve got a moment). ‘Sugar’ would be in top two. Slightly confusingly, on the parent album Witching Hour Ladytron set aside most of their synths and picked live drums (?????!!) and guitars (???!!??) which is why ‘Sugar’ sounds like an exceptionally good Garbage track. This would be slightly less confusing if Garbage didn’t also have a song called ‘Sugar’ which probably isn’t about cocaine, but what do I know. Ladytron did a better job anyway.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Ladytron performing ‘Sugar’ live, and oh boy, who knew it was possible to murder such a good song by performing it entirely without moving mannequin-style. The ‘Sugar’ lyrics are as elaborate as most Ladytron lyrics, which is to say not very, but electro-rock isn’t really a genre known for being a poetry book set to music. (Check if not Garbage.)

If i give you sugar, will you give me
Something elusive and temporary
If i give you sugar, will you give me
Something elusive and temporary
We got a signal to leave you alone
We’ll try to leave you
We’ll try to find you
If i give you sugar, will you give me
Something elusive and temporary
If i give you sugar, will you give me
Something elusive and temporary
If i give you sugar, will you give me
Something elusive and temporary
We got a signal to leave you alone
We’ll try to leave you
We’ll try to find you
If i give you sugar, will you give me
Something elusive and temporary
If i give you sugar, will you give me
Something elusive and temporary
If i give you sugar, will you give me
Something elusive and temporary
We got a signal to leave you alone

We’ll try to find you
If i give you sugar, will you give me
Something elusive and temporary
