Monthly Wrap Up May

Monthly Wrap Up: May 2021

May’s gone away in the blink of an eye. I just can’t believe we are almost at June and JFC, where the months are going?

Although we didn’t post as much on the blog, life’s been a bit crazy regardless. I got my first vaccine shot at the start of the month and then I decided to hand in my notice at work toward the end of it. This was the best decision for my mental health, though my bank account won’t thank me anytime soon, unless I manage to find a job in the next month or two. Fun times ahead. But you are not here to hear about all my personal whinings, so let’s move ahead.

In May, as you probably noticed, we took things a bit easy as we all had our personal lives intruding and quite frankly, we all deserve a break every once in a while. Also, burnout is a real fucking thing. Just saying. But we still didn’t leave you all alone, we toured books, we reviewed some, revealed covers and some of us are preparing for the next round of SPFBO. But I’ll talk more about that in later posts. For now, let’s see what we had on offer in May!

Book Reviews

In case you missed any of our reviews in May, it’s your chance to catch up!

Eye of Obscurance by Jeffrey L. Kohanek – 4/5

Eye of Obscurance by Jeffrey L. Kohanek

We repurposed Jen’s earlier review of Eye of Obscurance for the Book Blitz organized by Storytellers On Tour, so if it seems familiar, that’s why.

Jeffrey L. Kohanek has a knack for giving them fun personalities and lots of humorous interactions with one another. This is popcorn so it’s light on some of the rounding out of the characters – we do see clear motivations but occasionally there is a leap to get us from point a to b in the story, that’s ok too because this is unapologetically fun and isn’t trying to be anything else.”

The Silence of Bones – 4/5

The Silence of Bones by June Hur

Jen reviewed The Silence of BonesJune Hur‘s debut YA Historical Fiction novel.

The Silence of the Bones was a good solid debut and I will definitely be on the lookout for more of June Hur’s future books.”

A Gathering of Chaos by Cameron Hopkin – 4.5/5

A Gathering of Chaos by Cameron Hopkin

Jen got a request to review A Gathering of ChaosCameron Hopkin‘s newly released Epic Fantasy novel, as part of a successful RPG Kickstarter campaign.

A Gathering of Chaos was so much fun. I just had a blast with this book. I want more.

Fans of the old Forgotten Realms or the more recent The Copper Promise by Jen Williams may enjoy this one.”
