2023 had been a productive year reading-wise, but I try not to put too much pressure on myself to keep that speed up. I won’t be able to. So, once again I’m keeping my reading goals for 2024 pretty reasonable – even if my shortened TBR is longer than it was last year, lol. Buckle up peeps, because this is going to be one long-ass post with a lot of books mentioned. Hey, it might help grow your TBR. It looks so abandoned and sad 😉
I could promise that I will try to be more active this year, but… well, we all know that that won’t happen. However. I am determined to have a mid-year check-in as well as an end-of-the-year one like in 2023. I will also give occasional updates in my monthly newsletter (you can sign up here – please note that there will be a confirmation email and a welcoming letter, if you get that, you are all good. If not, let me know!), and of course I’ll have a Twitter thread for the books I’ve read in 2024 as well as an update thread for The Sound of Madness Challenge’s 2024 edition. Those are the best ways to keep up to date on how I’m faring with my reading goals for 2024.
GoodReads Reading Challenge
Last year I set the GoodReads Reading Challenge to 40 books, as I was struggling with 50 the previous year. I shouldn’t have to worry, as I overdid myself, but again, I don’t want to challenge myself too much, so I’m keeping the 40. It’s a nice, reasonable, and easily achievable number without any stress on my part.
UPDATE Q1: 19 books read, so absolutely on track.
UPDATE Q2: My GR count is at 28, so still good.
UPDATE Q3: Umm… I apparently forgot this? Sorry 😬
UPDATE Q4: Well. Finished with a whopping 54 read books. And these are only those I fully read. Not too bad.
Womble’s TBR Reduction Challenge
I had fun with Womble’s TBR Reduction Challenge in 2023, so I’m happy to attempt it again in 2024! Although, looking at the prompts and my schedule… well… I’m not quite sure I’ll make as well again, but here is to hoping!
For those who are not familiar with the challenge, a quick recap: There is a theme for each month to help to reduce your TBR (anything added BEFORE January 1st, 2024). There are also stretch goals if you are the competitive kind. It’s a pretty relaxed reading challenge and no one will police you so if you’d like to reduce your TBR a bit, this is a fun way to do so! If you follow Womble on Twitter, you can get handy reminders of each prompt at the beginning of the month.
I’ll start off with a bit of a cheat, because I absolutely had no time (nor the will to do anything blogging related if I’m being honest) to look through my TBR in December, so I only just got around to getting everything up to date. We are going to pretend I added all the books on my shortened TBR before January 1st (which is mostly true). You haven’t seen anything. If anyone asks, I’ll deny everything.
You can check out Womble’s TBR Reduction Challenge HERE.
UPDATE Q1: Not doing so well with this challenge so far, but I’m trying…
January – Lucky Dip: The Cloisters by Katy Hays. ‘A random book by someone I never read before’. I was looking for an audiobook that wasn’t fantasy, and I decided to pick this one up.
February – Lovers Meeting: The prompt for this month was to ‘read an author you’ve loved’. Which wouldn’t have been an issue, if I wasn’t so goddamn behind due to my 2-months slump. *sigh*
March – Spring Cleaning: I did a lot of mood reading in March, and though I tried to fit something to the prompt, it just didn’t happen. The ‘first book of a series you bought and now is finished (the series)’ shouldn’t have been hard, but all the first books I’ve read were for a series that weren’t finished yet so I failed again. I’ll try to do better.
UPDATE Q2: I got 2 out of three plus a stretch goal, so I’m getting there.
April – Diamond Anniversary: The Fourteen Carat Car by Jenő Rejtő. Since we had to read a book that’s over 60 years old and it also fit another challenge I was doing in April I thought it might be time to pick up this old classic. It’s been sitting on my shelf for a while now. Jenő Rejtő is a famous Hungarian author who writes satire and comedy. Until know I only read one of his books which I liked. I don’t know if it was the case of wrong time, wrong book or what but I didn’t enjoy this one as much.
May – The Fourth…: The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams. Soooo, I don’t really read SF, as it’s just not something I’m interested in, but May happened to be Wyrd & Wonder Month, and I organized a buddy read for The Ninth Rain, which happens to have SF elements, and so I decided it fits. Sorry Womble, I know you make the rules, but you can’t stop me from doing this. AND! I managed to reach a stretch goal too, whooo! Any book from the TBR counted, so it’s Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy for me.
June – The Longest Days: I’m sorry, but there was just no fucking way I’d read the longest book on my TBR when 1) June is one of the busiest months of the year for me, 2) I had a shitload of stuff to read, 3) I have no idea which is the longest book on my TBR and 4) and I don’t even want to know which is it. I don’t like super long books, so I avoid them whenever I can.
UPDATE Q3: out of the 3 prompts, I finished 3, although with a bit of cheating, because strictly speaking, not all of the books were on my TBR at the start of the year, soooo… but I won’t tell if you don’t.
July – The Ides Have It: The Faithful Dark by Cate Baumer. The prompt was to read a book with scheming/intrigue, and my runner-up to semi-finalist has that plenty. Admittedly, it’s not been long on my TBR, but I’m sure that’s fine. This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me personally, but a lot of people seem to love it, so the problem could be me. Especially as the Hungarian names and terms totally threw me in the beginning. For the stretch goal, which was a summer themed read, I went for Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez. Also haven’t been long on my TBR (mostly because it was released this year and I didn’t even know about it until Audible showed it to me), but since I got it on a sale and I was in the mood for some summery love story anyway, well 🤷🏻♀️
August – Travel Broadens the Mind: The Bitter Twins by Jen Williams. This was the easiest prompt ever, as we had to pick a book whose author lives in a different country than us. Which is, like all of the books I’m reading. Living in Hungary does have some perks, hah! I went for The Bitter Twins because this was my least cheaty option. Because it’s not cheating at all. I had the ebook omnibus for a good while now and I also own a set of paperbacks since last October (thanks to a friend who gave them to me), so even the mighty Womble couldn’t find a fault here. And better yet, I literally finished this book at WorldCon. I’m glad my friends kept pestering me about this trilogy as I’m liking it for sure, and will pick up the third book soon enough. For the stretch goal, holiday read, I picked The Reanimator’s Soul by Kara Jorgensen, which again, has been on my TBR only since July, when I read and fell in love with the first book in The Reanimator Mysteries series. I first listened the audiobook during my holiday in Glasgow (which was not a smart idea) so I had to relisten later in the month. BUT IT STILL COUNTS.
September – Back To School: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. I admit this could be a bit of a stretch, but try to stop me. When I first heard about the upcoming Netflix series based on this novel, I got curious, and decided to read the book first before I ever watch it. Had to wait a couple of months to do that, but since I got the audiobook in a sale, September seemed like a good month to pick it up. Strictly speaking, the MC is a highschool girl, learning about the murder of Andie Bell and the suicide of her boyfriend, Sal Singh that happened 5 years prior. And that kinda fits the prompt about a character learning about something. She sure does learn a lot.
UPDATE Q4: I finished as I started, apparently. Q4 definitely wasn’t my best when it comes to this particular challenge. In 2024 Q4, out of the 3 prompts, I finished 1, well maybe 1 and a half if we are being generous. As usual, I have to work with what I read and fit it into the prompts.
October – Yep It’s Halloween Time: Keeper of the Enchanted Rooms by Charlie N. Holmberg. Spooky time! Well, I haven’t read much of those this year, but this book features a haunted house, so that should do. And it was on my pre-made list so yay!
November – Short but Sweet: I was mostly reading ARCs and requests to clear my obligations before either reading anything I wanted or nothing at all, I did’t even stand a chance of reading four novellas. Even if I stretched things a bit to the whole year, I think I only read 2 overall.
December – Parting Gifts: I was planning to read a book that was gifted to me, but then I didn’t. So that’s it for me. That said, I did read a winter-themed book that fits the stretch goal, although I have no idea if I can make a score for that. Especially as I only added it to the TBR later into 2024 when I bought it on Audible… BUT NO ONE CAN STOP ME! So I’m claiming That Festive Feeling by Heidi Swain as my contribution.
The Sound of Madness Reading Challenge
The Sound of Madness is of course back for its fourth year! I already got the introduction post up, but here is a quick rundown: I have 25 music-based prompts, and I’ll attempt to fill out my bingo-like card during 2024. 1 will use 1 book/prompt, and only books read in 2024 will count. I will try not to add rereads. I had a LOT of fun coming up with the prompts, so I hope more people will join me in this one.
As usual, you can follow my Twitter update thread, you can join on The Storygraph and I also recommend checking out the Spotify playlist!
Check out The Sound of Madness Reading Challenge HERE
UPDATE Q1: I filled 4 prompts so far.
UPDATE Q2: Filled another 4 prompts, so currently sitting at 8 out of 25.
UPDATE Q3: Filled another 5 prompts, so currently sitting at 13 out of 25.
UPDATE Q4: Filled the last 12 prompts and with that I have 25 out of 25.
The current state of the card:
Choose Your Own Adventure: Year in Aeldia 2024 Reading Challenge
I’ve been hearing a lot about the Magical Readathon and I really would like to participate one day but with my schedule and reading habits, I just can’t do readathons. Also, the Magical Readathon slightly terrifies me with its size and all the stuff that got added over the years. So I was happy to stumble upon this challenge on Dini’s blog. I *love* choose your own adventure stuff, and since this is a year-long thing with pretty easily achievable prompts, I’m confident I’ll be able to participate! I’ll take it as all the other challenges I’m doing this year – super easy. I’ll read whatever I want/need to and then see if they fit anywhere. I’m not going to stress myself over it, which so far worked out well for me.
The Choose Your Own Adventure: Year in Aeldia 2024 Reading Challenge is in its second year, so I only missed one. It’s hosted by G @Book Roast (who is also behind the whole Magical Readathon, you should check out her videos if you are interested. She has a lot of cool additional stuff like booklets and whatnot). There is also a handy guide video for beginners who are getting lost in the whole maze that the readathon has become, lol. You know, I might actually try and get started with it, this will be the year when I won’t end up intimidated by it!! Though, to be fair, April and August are not the best times for me to do reading challenges… April is super busy at work, and August is the time we start reading our SPFBO semi-finalists, and also a busy time at work – the second half of the month, anyway.
Okay, so, as for the Choose Your Own Adventure Challenge, I think my goal will be a rescue cat. And then we’ll see what’s going to happen, lol.
UPDATE Q1: So far, so good.
January – Rely on your strength (read physically): Murder at Spindle Manor by Morgan Stang. I cheated a tiny bit and picked a book that I read on my Kindle. I mean, that’s physical enough for me. Originally I planned to go with the other route, but then as I looked at my monthly plans, this way worked out better for me.
February – Go towards and fight an animated gargoyle (book with non human characters): The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo. This was a no-brainer. It worked out well since I had an ARC due in February anyway. And it’s about fox spirits!
March – Cut your way through wild vines blocking an ancient exit (book neither first nor last in the series): The Killing Game by Michael Dylan. I was planning to read this in February, but it was a perfect fit for the March prompt, so… This was one of the reasons I picked this route.
UPDATE Q2: Still going strong, I think I’ll have no trouble with finishing this.
April – Back to Orilium (Readathon Month): So this year I was brave and gave a go to the Magical Readathon. While it was fun picking the books, but I don’t think I’ll do it ever again. Since I’m not taking part in the community (from what I hear, their Discord server is HUGE), it’s not so much fun alone. Plus even if I did some audiobooks, I almost sent myself back to burnout by forcing myself to read way too much, especially as it was the last month in SPFBO 9 and I had to finish some finalists. I think I’ll stick with this choose your adventure thing.
May – Extra credit in lore (title has multiple ‘L’s): Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy. I had to think a lot about how to move on after the readathon month, and the deciding factor was the later prompts. I had to take into consideration my upcoming plans and what I can fit in. It was a close call, but I was able to fit Skulduggery Pleasant in thanks to audiobooks. That it fit with Womble’s challenge was a bonus.
June – Read about first recorded companions (book you had for ages): Guild of Tokens by John Auerbach. With June being busy as hell, it’s a small miracle I was able to fit this in. Although I just finished it on July 3rd, we are not going to talk about that. I won’t tell if you won’t.
UPDATE Q3: Yep, no problems whatsoever.
July – Befriend and tame a messenger crow (Friend’s favourite): The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles. I decided to go with this book because 1) I heard a lot about these books over the years from friends, but was never interested in it much, until this year, when I got into M/M romance books and 2) I also got it on sale from Audible. I’m not sure I can say it’s a friend’s favourite, per se, but boy did I see it a lot on my feed at one point in time.
August – Back to Orilium (Readathon month): I was a brave lady this year and finally faced the Magical Readathon back in April. While fun, it became clear that I can’t possibly force myself to complete everything that needs to be completed, simply because I either don’t read as many books, or because other obligations makes it super hard. I accepted defeat and didn’t even try it in August.
September – Follow a giddy friend through a shiny rift portal (Cozy/comfort book): Revelation by C.J. Sansom. It wasn’t planned, exactly, but I decided that I’ll reread the whole Shardlake series through audiobooks. Some of the books in the series I tend to pick up in every so often, especially when I want to listen to something but I can’t cope with anything new so I reach for something familiar. Now that I have the full set, I decided to go all the way. It started with the release of the first season of the Shardlake series on Disney back in May, just a few days after Sansom’s death. Seemed like a good way to pay respects, listening to Dissolution, and then it just came naturally. While Revelation isn’t my favorite in the series, and it’s not usually one I reread, it still counts as a comfort book for me.
UPDATE 4: And I’m done!
October – It took you to a tavern crawl. No thanks! You head home (House as a main setting or character): Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie N. Holmberg. Man, I’ve been waiting for this month to read this book. It’s just such a perfect fit. The book is mostly set in a haunted house, which happens to be its own character as well.
November – Magically warm up your blanket and cozy up with your book (Favorite author): My reading didn’t quite go as I planned, and while I’m trying to do all my challenges without rereads, this time I had to break my own rule a few times for this one. This year I’ve been rereading the Shardlake series by C. J. Sansom. In November it was the turn of book 6, Lamentation.
December – Miss your impling. Pspsps so it comes running to you (Heist story): For a while it looked like I’d fail this challenge at the last minute. And then out of the blue, I decided to reread Double or Nothing by Craig Schaefer when I realized that I hadn’t read a single book by her in 2024 even though I wanted to catch up with the Daniel Faust series. As it turns out, it also features a heist story so I was saved!
Making a shortened TBR list worked out really well for me in 2023, so I’m sticking to it again! I did surprisingly well last year, so I’m hoping the trend will keep up. Since it’s hard to say what’s going to happen later in the year, I will have one major update in June when I’ll have a clearer view of what’s coming in the second half of the year, and I will also be able to include the new batch of SPFBO books.
Most of the titles I didn’t get to in 2023 were moved to 2024 (which is nice, that means less work for me on this massive post, yay!), but I also added some new titles – new upcoming releases, books I got in 2023, etc. I was hoping to keep this list at 50 books, but… well, that didn’t happen. I’m blaming the 9 SPFBO finalists for that, and I’m sticking to my story!! And so I ended up with a nice round 70…
Also, a heads up: I’m planning to have a buddy read for The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams in May for Wyrd & Wonder Month. Imyril kindly said she’ll join me and also helps spreading the word about it. We’ll do shout outs closer to time, but please mark your calendars if you’d like to join us!
Now, let’s get down to business. If you’d like to know more about the books listed below, clicking on the titles will take you to their respective GoodReads pages. I’ll update this post once the yet-to-be-announced covers and info will be available.
UPDATE Q1: 13 books cleared out of 70! Not too shabby.
UPDATE Q2: 20 books out of 70 cleared. Slowed down a bit, but that was expected.
UPDATE Q3: 23 books out of 70 cleared. Could be better, but it was SPFBO season, so…
UPDATE Q4: 26 books out of 70. Ouch. Well, I hoped the numbers would be better, but it is what it is.
